Even More Questions About Compost You’ll Want To Know

Whether you’re new to the composting industry or have managed an operation for years, you are likely to have some interesting questions.  Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about composting: including some you may never have considered.

What can be used as a starter for making compost?

There are a few different options for starting your composting process. One of the most common is using a small amount of finished compost from a previous batch to jumpstart the decomposition process. You can also add some garden soil or manure as a starter, as these contain beneficial microorganisms that help break down organic matter.

Another option is to use a commercial compost starter, which typically comes in powdered form and contains various strains of bacteria and fungi. These can be effective in speeding up the composting process, but they are not necessary for successful composting. If you have a large operation, this will likely be the best option.

Does sawdust make good compost?

Sawdust can be a great addition to compost piles, as long as it is used in moderation. This material is high in carbon and can help balance out the nitrogen-rich materials typically found in kitchen scraps and green waste. However, sawdust should not make up more than 10% of compost piles, as too much can create a dense and compacted environment that inhibits airflow.

Do you need to add dirt when making compost?

You do not necessarily need to add dirt when making compost. However, adding a small amount of soil can help introduce beneficial microorganisms and provide some structure to the pile. If your compost is made up of mostly food scraps and green waste, it is recommended to add a layer of soil or finished compost every few inches to help balance out the materials.

Is it okay to compost nutgrass?

You can compost nutgrass, also known as nutsedge. It is a common weed in many gardens and lawns that is high in nitrogen and can add valuable nutrients to compost piles. However, it is important to note that nutgrass seeds are resilient and may survive the composting process. To avoid spreading this weed, it is recommended to thoroughly mix the nutgrass into the middle of the compost pile where it will reach higher temperatures and break down more effectively.

Can Azolla be used for compost?

Azolla, also known as mosquito ferns,  can make a great addition to compost piles. This small aquatic plant is high in nitrogen and can help speed up the decomposition process. It also adds beneficial nutrients to the final compost product. However, be sure to thoroughly mix Azolla into the compost pile and avoid adding large amounts at once, as it can quickly become compacted and inhibit airflow.

Can you compost store-bought salsa?

Store-bought salsa can be added to compost piles. It is a rich source of organic matter and will break down effectively in the composting process. However, it is important to avoid brands that contain preservatives or additives, as these can harm beneficial microorganisms in the pile.
